2022 School Year - Most Schools have Reopened!
After two years of school closures and disruptions, Uganda mandated schools to reopen on January 10, 2022.
In spite of the good news, there was anxiety about how schools helped through Classrooms for Africa had faired. So, we wrote to each school which Classrooms for Africa donors have help during the past 15 years to ask for an update on their status. Now three weeks into the new school year we are very encouraged and excited to hear back from most of the schools so far. Over 30 reported they are fully open and have survived the long ordeal. We still waiting for a report back from a couple of schools.
There are some scars which COVID has left. A couple of schools have reported that some of their teachers have passed on. Some of the older girls have dropped out because of pregnancies. Other students are unable to return because there are no funds to pay their school fees as parents have lost their jobs or also passed away. As we expected, several schools are struggling to set themselves up with the mandated SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) required by the government for reopening. These include masking, hand sanitizers, distancing and health checks.
However, the overall feeling is optimism and the spirit to do what it takes to provide an education for their students. It appears that many private and government schools have closed permanently and Classrooms for Africa has provided permanent good buildings which attract many new families. Most schools are still taking students registrations. Some have lower enrolments than before but many have increased enrolment. An estimate of the number of students attending so far is over 5,000 students K - 12. This is encouraging news as Classrooms for Africa’s contribution is being felt even after the upheaval and devastation of the pandemic. We are so grateful to our faithful donors. Below are photos showing students who have returned to some of the schools.
